Congressman Dave Brat Endorses Peake In 22nd

Republican State Senate candidate Mark Peake was endorsed today in the 22nd District State Senate Special Election by Congressman Dave Brat.

“Mark is a proven conservative who will represent the 22nd district well. I urge all my friends to vote Mark Peake in the January 10th Special Election,” Brat said. The special election is scheduled for Tuesday, January 10th to fill Congressman Tom Garrett’s unexpired term in the State Senate.

“I am honored to have earned Dave’s endorsement. The folks in Louisa and Goochland know him well, and the rest of the district may know him as one of Virginia’s strongest conservatives in Congress, and a fiscal watchdog on spending and waste in the budget,” Peake said.

Because of the makeup of the senate, control of the state senate hinges on the outcome of this race. If Republicans fail to win the race, the Democrats will be able to wield their tie-breaking vote on partisan lines to kill any and all legislation advanced out of the house and into the senate.

Brat added, “Republicans have had a great year electorally, and Virginia Republicans have an opportunity to achieve another victory in the upcoming Special Election – saving the Virginia Senate. Mark Peake is the only candidate on the January 10th ballot who will fight for our conservative values of limited government.”

“I am the only pro-life, pro-gun, pro-free markets, and pro-civil liberties candidate on the ballot. With the support our voters here in the 22nd, and Congressman Brat, I look forward to being able to carry the torch for those values and principles in our state senate,” Peake said.

Mark Peake resides in Lynchburg with his wife of twenty-one years, Lila, and their five children. A 1988 graduate of Washington and Lee Law School, Mark has practiced law in Lynchburg for nearly thirty years. Mark has consistently been involved in his local community, serving with numerous organizations including: Commonwealth Transportation Board, Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, Lynchburg Bar Association, Board of Directors of Lynchburg Youth & Prevention Services, and Lynchburg Republican Committee.

Peake, Washington win nominations to run for Garrett’s state Senate seat

Peake, Washington win nominations to run for Garrett’s state Senate seat

Andrew Cain – Dec 3, 2016

Lynchburg lawyer and GOP activist Mark Peake will face off against former Fluvanna County Sheriff Ryant L. Washington of Palmyra in the Jan. 10 special election to fill the state Senate seat of Congressman-elect Thomas A. Garrett Jr., R-5th.

Peake topped Goochland County Supervisor Ken Peterson on Saturday at a GOP convention at Hampden-Sydney College. Washington prevailed over Lynchburg teacher Katie Webb Cyphert in a Democratic caucus held at the Moton Museum in Farmville.

The special election is set for the day before the General Assembly session begins.

“I feel good about where I stand,” Peake said in a telephone interview, noting that he has been campaigning since January in anticipation of Garrett’s nomination and victory for the congressional seat.

“I will continue to talk about representing our conservative values in Richmond and standing up to government interference and government overreach,” Peake said.

Peake said he also wants to address what has become a compensation crisis for Virginia State Police and for local sheriff’s departments.

The GOP-leaning 22nd Senate District runs west from Goochland County to include Amherst and Appomattox counties, as well as parts of Lynchburg.

Washington said in a phone interview that he hopes to be a voice for the localities in the district on issues such as public safety, health care, education and the economy.

“The economy is the driving issue,” and a strong education is key to a strong workforce, said Washington, adding that it is important that “we don’t enact burdensome policies.”

Democratic Party of Virginia Chairwoman Susan Swecker said in a statement: “Ryant Washington will be a change-maker for Virginia’s 22nd Senatorial District by fighting for good-paying jobs, affordable health care, education, and other critical issues facing the commonwealth.”

John Whitbeck, chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, said in a phone interview: “Mark Peake is a longtime (GOP) activist in Virginia and an accomplished attorney. We look forward to his campaign and to his service in the Senate.”

On Nov. 8, Garrett defeated Democrat Jane Dittmar to succeed retiring U.S. Rep. Robert Hurt, R-5th.

Peake, a married father of five — including a set of 18-year-old quadruplets — is a graduate of Virginia Tech with a law degree from Washington and Lee University.

Then-Gov. Bob McDonnell appointed Peake to the Commonwealth Transportation Board. Peake also is a former chairman of the Lynchburg City Republican Committee.

Washington, a married father of two, was elected Fluvanna County sheriff in 1999 after having served as a deputy sheriff and as a state trooper.

In 2014, Gov. Terry McAuliffe named Washington as a special policy adviser to the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

McAuliffe appointed Washington to address issues in ABC’s law enforcement division after a University of Virginia student was mistakenly arrested on suspicion of an underage alcohol purchase. It turned out that she bought sparkling water.

Tom Garrett Endorses Mark Peake for Virginia Senate

FARMVILLE, VA – This weekend the 22nd District Republican Committee hosted a convention at Hampden-Sydney College to nominate Congressman-elect Tom Garrett’s successor in the Virginia Senate.

After a round of speeches from 2017 candidates including Ed Gillespie and Bryce Reeves, 22nd Senatorial District candidates Mark Peake and Ken Peterson took the stage to make their final pitch to delegates.

As results were finalized, Peake emerged as the victor. In an admirable and humble motion for party loyalty, Ken Peterson requested that the delegates nominate Mark Peake with unanimous consent.

Following Peake’s victory, Congressman-elect Tom Garrett issued the following statement:

“Heading into this weekend, I was confident that the 22nd District would continue to have a conservative champion ready to best represent the interests of this amazing district. I have known Mark for years and wholeheartedly believe in his ability to lead and serve. I would like to take this opportunity to endorse Mark enthusiastically and I look forward to working with him in service to the people of Virginia. I would also like to commend Ken Peterson for both his record of conservative leadership in Goochland and his willingness to serve the 22nd District.”

The special election for the 22nd seat will take place on January 10 with the Republican nominee favored by several points. Congressman-elect Garrett officially swears in on January 3.

Peake Wins Nomination Convincingly

Farmville, VA – Mark Peake won the Republican 22nd State Senate District Convention held at Hampden Sydney’s Kirk Athletic Center. After a floor fight that saw Steve “Doc” Troxel win the convention chairmanship in a test vote between the two sides, the convention ran quickly and smoothly as several statewide candidates gave speeches, including Ed Gillespie, Frank Wagner, Bryce Reeves, and John Adams.

Peake said, “I had an incredible team that worked tirelessly across the district to secure delegates to the convention.” The two sides waged an impressive convention battle with over 850 delegates registered and 456 delegates certified at the convention.

“I’m grateful to the folks who came here today to choose our next nominee. We came together as Republicans from across the 22nd District to choose a nominee and turn to the special election contest as a strong and united party so that we can maintain a majority in the state senate, and continue to advance our conservative principles,” Peake said.

After conceding the election, Peterson made a gracious appeal for party unity so that the party can win in Jan. Both sides agreed that it was imperative for the party and the nominee to retain the seat in order to preserve a slim 21-19 advantage in the state senate. Peake’s victory today clears the way for the largely Republican district to once again send a conservative Republican to Richmond.

Mark Peake Announces Candidacy for Republican Nomination for the 22nd State Senate Seat

Friends of Mark Peake
Lynchburg, VA

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA:  Mark Peake today declared his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the State Senate from the 22nd District of Virginia.  An attorney with Caskie & Frost and a former chairman of the Lynchburg Republican City Committee, Peake said his intention is to succeed Senator Tom Garrett of Buckingham in representing the district that includes a large portion of Lynchburg and the entirety of the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Cumberland, Goochland, Fluvanna, Prince Edward, and a portion of Louisa.

Garrett is seeking the Republican nomination to succeed U.S. Representative Robert Hurt, Republican of Chatham, in the 5th Congressional District.  Rep. Hurt will be retiring from Congress at the end of 2016.

Peake is well known in Republican circles across the Commonwealth and describes himself as “a commonsense social and fiscal conservative.”  He is a graduate of Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee Law School.  Peake and his wife, Lila, are parents of five children, four of whom are quadruplets, 18 years-of-age, and a younger daughter, 16.

Peake served on the Commonwealth Transportation Board by appointment of former Governor Bob McDonnell, and he has been active in numerous congressional and statewide campaigns for Republican candidates for a quarter-century. Peake announced that already he has raised nearly $25,000.00 in donations from more than 50 individuals.

Peake emphasized that his candidacy hinges on Senator Garrett being successful in his campaign for the 5th District seat in Congress.  Should Senator Garrett win in November, a special election would be scheduled to elect a member of the State Senate to succeed Garrett in time for the 2017 General Assembly.

During 2016, Peake intends to conduct a full-bore campaign on behalf of the Republican candidate for President as well as Republican congressional candidates.
